How Long Does an ADHD Assessment Take in Queensland?

By Dr Dipti McGowan, Clinical Psychologist

If you or your child has been referred for an ADHD assessment in Queensland, one of the first questions you are likely to have is how long the whole process takes. The short answer is that a comprehensive ADHD assessment typically spans several weeks from your first contact to receiving your written report; the total time in assessment sessions is usually between two and four hours depending on the person's age and complexity.

Here is a practical breakdown of what to expect at each stage.

Stage 1: Intake and Preparation

Before your assessment sessions begin, you will complete an intake process. This involves a structured questionnaire covering developmental history, current concerns, relevant medical and educational background, and consent documentation.

For child and adolescent assessments, parents or caregivers are asked to complete standardised rating scales, typically including teacher rating forms sent to the school. Gathering these forms can add a few days to the preparation stage, so the earlier they are sent out, the better.

A brief phone consultation (approximately 15 minutes) may also be arranged to confirm assessment suitability, answer logistical questions, and clarify the purpose of the referral.

Typical intake stage: 1–2 weeks, largely dependent on how quickly forms are returned.

Stage 2: Assessment Sessions

The assessment itself involves one or more sessions of standardised psychometric testing and clinical interview. For most ADHD assessments, the total time in session is:

  • Children and adolescents: 2.5–4 hours (often split across two sessions)
  • Adults: 2–4 hours (often completed in one session)

Testing measures cognitive ability, attention, executive function, and behavioural regulation using validated instruments. For children, standardised cognitive testing such as the WISC-V is commonly included, which adds time compared to adult assessments.

Sessions can be conducted in-person at our Burleigh Heads rooms or, for adult assessments, via secure telehealth where appropriate.

You do not need to prepare for assessments. Results reflect your current functioning; there is nothing to study or practise.

Typical sessions stage: 1–2 appointments over 1–2 weeks.

Stage 3: Report Preparation

After the sessions are complete, the psychologist scores and interprets all assessment results in the context of your history and presentation. A comprehensive written report is then prepared, documenting:

  • Assessment findings across all measured domains
  • Diagnostic impressions (with reference to DSM-5-TR criteria where applicable)
  • Evidence-based recommendations for school, workplace, treating clinicians, and/or NDIS purposes

This stage takes time to do properly. Report preparation typically takes 2–3 weeks from the completion of all sessions.

If collateral information is still awaited (such as teacher reports or medical records), the clock starts once all information has been received.

Stage 4: Feedback Session

A feedback session is offered after the written report has been finalised. This 50–60 minute appointment gives you the opportunity to:

  • Review the report and ask questions about the findings
  • Discuss recommendations and how to action them
  • Receive guidance on sharing the report with schools, employers, NDIS planners, or treating clinicians

Feedback sessions can be conducted in-person or via telehealth.

Total Timeline

From first contact to receiving your written report, allow 4–6 weeks for a comprehensive ADHD assessment. This reflects the intake process, scheduling, assessment sessions, and report preparation. Complex cases or delays in returning collateral forms can extend this timeline.

If you have a time-sensitive requirement, such as a school support application, an NDIS planning meeting, or an upcoming workplace review, let us know when you enquire so we can discuss whether the timeline can be accommodated.

A Note on "Quick" ADHD Assessments

We do not offer same-day or very short (abbreviated) ADHD assessments. A comprehensive ADHD assessment that meets the standards required for NDIS, school-based adjustments, or specialist medication review requires standardised psychometric testing, collateral information, and a detailed written report. Abbreviated assessments that omit these components may not meet the documentation requirements of the body you are referencing the report to.
